StreetPilot c550 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty points of interest (POIs) database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the super-bright sunlight-readable color screen to enter a destination, and the c550 takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. It even announces the name of exits and streets so you never have to take your eyes off the road. In addition, the c550 accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs. The European version even includes a preloaded safety camera database containing the location of safety cameras for parts of Europe. Talk about worry-free driving. I still use this most days but I don't want to spend $70.00 to update it for one year now so we will probably buy a replacement in a few years with the lifetime update program. I loved this GPS as it has "Truck Routes" in it for us RV enthusiasts but it has now been discontinued by Garmin so I cannot get their lifetime Update program which disappoints me. Otherwise it has been a wonderful piece of equipment and I would recommend Garmin and Amazon for the free shipping and no sales tax.
I ordered this model because my husband received the same one as a gift, and I loved his. Great price for great model.
It appears to me that this was a repackaged item that was not checked to verify that everything was in the package. I am sure this is because the settings are for scenic route, back roads only or something else but since there are no real instructions I will have to stumble around with the program until I figure it out. I just returned from a short trip 3 hours from home and it tried to take me on a path 45 minutes out of my way. I have tried to purchase a cable but since I live in a rural community the resources are skimpy. So far this unit works fairly well but I haven't been able to figure out all of the features yet. It came with a flyer of quick instructions but no real instruction book. It was advertised to include an interface cable to the computer and a suction mount neither of which was in the box.
It's well worth your money I also bought a SquareTrade warranty for 3 years on it for fairly cheap. Never had a problem with this.gives great directions all the time but you need to keep the maps updated annually. I bought mine refurbished and it works just like a new one, never had any issues. Buy it.
In the city it will take me through all kinds of small side streets when there is a major street right next to it that goes directly to my destination. I don't know what it is about this unit but it seems to take the strangest routes. I can start from the same location and going to the same destination and this unit will take me on two different routes.So maybe the newer Garmins are decent but I definitely cannot recommend this one. I bought this a year ago because of all the excellent reviews on Amazon. The unit itself works fine and does a lot of good things but there is one thing it does not do well: plot routes. And then to make it even more weird it does not always take the same route.
